National League 2 North - Club Watch

This week Otley Rugby Club head south west for a league fixture against Stourbridge. Neither team have started the season as expected.

The last time TalkingRugbyUnion were with Otley, they notched up an impressive win at home versus Sedgley Park.

Some of TalkingRugbyUnion’s favourite players over the past 12 months have played at Otley; these include Jonny Matthews, George Burkinshaw and Chris Gemmell.

Otley is a club rich in tradition albeit some of our photos show a listed terrace stand - authentic Yorkshire Rugby it is. Otley RUFC formed in 1865 and are one of the most distinguished rugby clubs in the country.

The First XV have played at the top of the National Leagues for over a decade, and many internationals have come through their Junior section including Nigel Melville and more recently Danny Care.

The club  have hosted some memorable occasions including the North's defeat of the All Blacks in 1979, the North versus Australia in 1988, and Italy versus the USA in the 1991 Rugby World Cup.

The First XV play rugby on a semi-professional basis in National League One, and the second team Otley Saracens play in the Yorkshire Premier League for 2nd XV teams, with The Viscounts enjoying more social rugby.
