The Jaguares shattered Lions' hopes of topping the overall Super Rugby 2016 standings with an impressive 34-22 win at José Amalfitani Stadium on Saturday.

The visitors were leading by five points by the 48th minute until Lions' number eight Cyle Brink was sin-binned. The Jaguares grabbed the opportunity with both hands by scoring a converted try and a penalty to take flip the five point lead in their favor.

Coach Johan Ackermann's men failed to make a comeback from the damage and slumped further below, in the end conceding a comfortable victory to the home side by a margin of 12 points.

Fly-half Nicolas Sanchez scored more than half of his team's overall points with the boot by successfully slotting five penalties and converting two out of three tries.

Number eight Facundo Isa (48) and replacement lock Matias Alemanno (65) crossed over for tries in addition to match referee Rohan Hoffmann awarding a penalty try to the home side on the 56th minute.

Winger Anthonie Volmink (13, 41) scored a double for the Lions, while fullback Sylvian Mahuza (26) managed to score a try for the visitors.

Fly-half Jaco van der Walt succeeded in converting two out of three tries apart from scoring a fourth minute penalty for the South African side.

The Lions will now face the Crusaders at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg next weekend for the quarter-final clash.
