Former Australia international George Smith released from detention in Japan

Former Wallabies international George Smith has been released from detention in Japan after he was charged with allegedly assaulting a taxi driver while drunk.

The 37-year-old was also charged with robbery resulting in bodily injury in an incident that was alleged to have happened on 31st December last year.

According to reports, it is understood that the 37-year-old took a taxi in Fuchu city and ran away without paying the fare of 9,830 yen and when the driver tried to chase him down, Smith assaulted him resulting in his detention by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police.

Smith was released from detention on Thursday, but prosecutors say the investigation is ongoing.

Smith has played 111 Tests for Australia and announced international retirement in February 2010. He is currently playing in the Japanese Top League in which he represents Suntory Sungoliath.
