Fiji have been dealt a severe blow ahead of the Rugby World Cup scheduled this year with head coach Vern Cotter stepping down from the role due to personal reasons.

Cotter, who coached Scotland between 2014 and 2017 joined Fiji in 2020 and was assisted by New Zealanders Daryl Gibson and Glen Jackson.

Even though the exact reason for his departure is unknown, Fiji Rugby chairman Humphrey Tawake said a new head coach will be appointed in due course of time.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the players and coaches I have worked with during my time with the team,” he said.

“I feel the team has made some significant improvements over the last few years both on and off the field.

“I believe we built a great culture which was testament to some good people working hard and enjoying each other’s company and I’m disappointed to be leaving at this time.”

Cotter becomes the latest to leave the coaching role leading to the World Cup after Steve Borthwick replaced Eddie Jones as England head coach while Warren Gatland took in charge of Wales from Wayne Pivac. Jones though became the head coach of the Wallabies in the place of Dave Rennie.
