Currie Cup round 2 - Review

The end of Currie Cup Round two saw the Lions and the Sharks set the pace as they dismantled their opposition.

There was a rather buzz from the Lions game in particular with Lourens Erasmus scoring the fastest try in Currie Cup history as he regathered a botched kick off from the Pumas as he picked up Jaco van der Walt kick and ghosted through defenders to score just inside the left pole- 8.5 seconds.

The Lions are the talk of the town and made a statement with a vastly changed squad yesterday. The Lions won 68-26 against a Pumas side that was erratic, defensively absent and resilient at the same time. The side opened their Currie Cup campaign with a 10 star performance.

With the early pace setters the Sharks having played on Friday night, they were in no mood to take the foot off the pedal as they blew the Griquas away in a 46-24 thrashing. The core sides are full value for their status as their Super Rugby stars proving the difference in the competition.

The Griquas, Pumas, Eastern Province and Boland are going to struggle at this level. The quality is stark and this was evident when the Kings who played with a plethora of debutants in Barbarian format. They played against a clinical Boland Cavaliers side as they lost 28-10. The difference in fitness was evident as was their synergy.

The game of the week belonged to old rivals the Cheetahs against the Blue Bulls. The Bulls set the pace last week as they thrashed the Western Province side.. This week was completely different as the side was unable to deal with the rush defence the Cheetahs implemented and this was coupled with a pack failing to front up and a pivot who was making some terrible decisions.

The Bulls will need to rethink their game plan next week as they look to banish the 43-20 thrashing away in Free State. The Currie Cup is finally up and running and will be very interesting as the Lions, Sharks and Cheetahs have set the stage alight. Can anyone pick a winner? I definitely can’t.
