Brumbies managed to hold off a late fight from Queensland Reds as they kick started their 2020 Super Rugby season with a 27-24 win at GIO Stadium on Friday.

Brumbies kick-started the proceedings in the fifth minute with Irae Simone diving over the line and Noah Lolesio improving it make it 7-0. Reds suffered a setback with Brandon Paenga-Amosa leaving the field injured but they went on to level the scores with Henry Speight dotting down before the end of the first quarter.

Hegarty with a penalty kick in the 26th minute provided Reds with a three-point lead that soon became 10 points at the stroke of half-time with the fullback scoring a converted try.

Brumbies were quick to get off the block in the second half with Tom Wright dotting down in the 47th minute and Folau Fainga'a's try in the 58th minute ensured the home side had the scores levelled with 17-17 scoreline.

With the final 10 minutes about to begin, Thomas Banks' try provided Brumbies advantage with Noah Lolesio's conversion and a penalty kick making it 27-17 which proved just enough despite Harry Wilson's try in the 77th minute.
