World Rugby organises Medical Commission Conference for injury-prevention strategies

World Rugby has organised the eighth Medical Commission Conference in London on 14th and 15th November with primary focus on dealing with players' welfare and injury prevention strategies.

Sporting and independent medical experts around the world with gather in the conference to discuss the research conducted at various levels and recommend evidence-based strategies to further strengthen players' welfare.

Considering, the severity of injuries have not increased since 2002, the commission will now concentrate on injury prevention at age-grade level and in developing rugby nations.

Managing training of the players has become one of the major challenges for the teams these days and the World Rugby Medical Commission Conference will also look to address the issue with a wide range of research conducted on it along with the measure to reduce the impact of concussion and other head related injuries.

World Rugby Chief Medical Officer Dr Martin Raftery said players' health has been the top most priority in today's sport and also urged on the importance of having a proper learning programme in place.

"Player welfare is World Rugby's number one priority and, guided by leading independent experts, our evidence-based approach is helping protect players at all levels of the game. The medical commission has been a driving force behind player welfare and medical advancements and the conference an invaluable forum to share and consider information from the wider sporting and medical environment.

"Our approach is centered around education and in 2016 alone we have seen an 80 per cent increase in the use of our www.playerwelfare.worldrugby.org website which is delivered in 11 languages, 3,100 medics have undertaken our elite immediate care in rugby course, 69,000 people have completed online concussion education and a further 250,000 have undertaken concussion education around the world within our Rugby Ready programme.”
