There were a number of upsets on day one of the Fitness First Central Coast Sevens which sets up an intriguing second day of action.

Wellington, Daveta, Yamacia and Rangataua all topped their pools to qualify for the last eight in the men's competition.

However, College Rifles eliminated Tribe and a last-minute score from Warringah denied Borneo Eagles a last-eight place.

The shadow international teams from Australia, Canada and Fiji, along with Wasps from New Zealand's Bay of Plenty, were the best teams on show in the women's competition.

Brasil and Japan's Rugirl remain in contention for the $12,000 first prize.

In the men's competition, Wellington topped Pool A courtesy of a 15-7 win over Red Rock, a 17-12 victory over Te Whanau and 22-12 triumph over USA's Stars Rugby.

Winger Ambrose Curtis scored five tries.

Pool B was comfortably wrapped up by Daveta, who beat College Rifles 31-5, Tribe 22-14 and Manly 28-5 with Jerry Tuwai scoring four tries.

Rifles beat Tribe 20-10 to end as runners-up and they will play Pool C winners Yamacia.

In Pool D, Rangataua played out a 26-26 draw with Borneo Eagles. Rangataua went on to win the group and the Eagles missed out, finishing behind Warringah.

In the women's competition, Aussie Pearls dominated Pool A, beating Wasps 24-14, Stars Rugby 28-0 and Sydney Fiji Ranadu 54-0. Ellia Green picked up a brace of hat-tricks.

"We love playing Central Coast Sevens, it's a good atmosphere and lovely weather and this is a really good tournament for us to try things leading up to Dubai," Emilee Cherry, who scored twice, said.

"We can give some of the new girls game time as well," she added.

Canada's Maple Leafs stormed through Pool B without conceding a point, shutting out Sunnyback (36-0), Te Whanau (40-0) and Greater Sydney rams (39-0).

Wasps went through as runners-up and will play Tribe.

Fijiana topped Pool C after big wins over Rugirl (48-0), Maroubra (45-5) and Central Coast Academy (45-5) while in Pool D, Tribe won by beating Brasil 33-7.
