Northampton Saints have been dealt a blow ahead of the upcoming season as their centre Tom Stephenson has been sidelined with a broken leg.

The 22-year-old sustained the injury during his side's pre-season 35 - 19 victorious encounter against Rotherham Titans on Saturday at Franklin's Gardens. The former England Under-20 went to the social media platform Twitter to confirm the status on his injury.

"A lot of people asking what I've done. I have snapped my tibia and fibia (hence the loud crack) but I've had an operation this morning and feeling a lot better, thanks for the support, it's been amazing, and I'll be back soon!"

Stephenson has played 23 games in the Aviva Premiership for the Saints between 2013 and 2015 while scoring five tries in it.

After finishing fifth in the previous season, Northampton will complete their pre-season friendly with Ulster on 26th August at Kingspan Stadium before beginning their 2016/17 season with a home game against Bath Rugby on 3rd September.
