South Africa 18-10 Australia, Loftus Versfeld
Scorecard

Morne Steyn's exceptional kicking skills came to Springboks' rescue as the men in green and gold managed to overcome the Wallabies challenge with a 18-10 win at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria during the 2016 Rugby Championship clash on Saturday.

Allister Coetzee's men were finally able to arrest their slump in form with an encouraging display in front of home fans as the Wallabies once again return back empty-handed from South Africa.

In a game which saw just one try scored; that too by the visitors, the Boks' fans will be pretty content with the three-match losing streak coming to an end.

The desperation for the hosts to win the contest was clearly evident when fly-half Steyn scored a drop goal on just the fourth minute of the match.

On the eight minute, the visitors earned a penalty on the Boks' 22 which allowed Bernard Foley to square the scoreboard 3-3.

The visitors scored the first, which also turned out to be eventually the only try of the match, on the 14th minute when loosehead prop Scott Sio crossed over the try line following some exceptional work by openside flanker Michael Hooper and number-eight Sean McMahon.

Foley's conversion gave the visitors a seven-point lead, thus adding further to the desperation of the hosts.

A scrum penalty to the hosts on the 26th minute offered Steyn a chance to reduce three points of the deficit and the 32-year-old did not disappoint his side.

Game's first yellow card was issued to Israel Folau on the 34th minute after the Wallabies fullback was found guilty of obstructing Bryan Habana. The sin-bin offered another penalty scoring opportunity to the Boks thereby reducing the lead of the visitors to merely a single point.

The Boks ultimately ended up taking a slender two-point lead by the end of the first-half courtesy of another penalty by Steyn at the brink of the half-time break.

The two sides brought in a series of changes in the first 20 minutes of the second half as neither side was able to further supplement their points tally.

The hosts finally scored on the 76th minute when the Wallabies were penalized for holding on in front of their posts, thus allowing Steyn another easy three points.

On the penultimate minute of the game, Steyn nailed a monster of a drop goal from the opponents 10 yard line to extend the lead further eight points, with that putting the visitors out of the contention from grabbing the hard fought win.

The win has now allowed Boks to climb up a position to the second spot in the points table by dis lodging their opponents with a single point lead.

The Boks will now face the tournament favorites All Blacks at the Growthpoint Kings Park in Durban during the next weekend's clash, while the Wallabies will travel to the Twickenham Stadium in London to face Agustin Creevy's Pumas.
