Wasps scrum-half Joe Simpson will be out for up to two months with the knee problem he sustained in Saturday's Aviva Premiership defeat by Leicester.

It was initially feared that Simpson had suffered a major injury but his club have announced he has incurred only a grade two medial collateral ligament strain that requires six to eight weeks of rehabilitation.

"No operation is required and medical staff are confident he will make a full recovery in time to participate in pre-season and in any World Cup preparations should he be selected," a Wasps statement read.

Simpson had an outside chance of making England's extended World Cup training squad, which will be announced by head coach Stuart Lancaster on Wednesday.
