Canada international DTH van der Merwe is set to join Newcastle Falcons after signing a long-term contract with the Aviva Premiership club.

The 30-year-old will end his association with Welsh regional side Scarlets and is expected to join the Kingston Park outfit this summer.

The 6 ft wing has made 96 appearances for Glasgow Warriors between 2009 and 2015 before joining Scarlets and has amassed 23 tries for Canada from just 42 games including an impressive outing in the 2015 World Cup as well.

Newcastle Falcons rugby director Dean Richards had high praises for van der Merwe and believes his try-scoring ability will benefit the club.

"DTH is a top-class finisher who has been doing it on a consistent basis for club and country over a number of years now.

"He has played in three Rugby World Cups, he has averaged almost a try every other game in the PRO12 and in Europe for the past seven seasons, and he is precisely the kind of player who can help this club move up to the next level.

"We are a team who create plenty of try-scoring opportunities, but have not always had that ability to finish them off.

"DTH definitely gives us that, and we look forward to working with him when he joins us ahead of next season"
