New Zealand back-row Luke Jacobson has been ruled out of the upcoming World Cup in Japan after a delayed onset of concussion.

Jacobson, who has played two Tests for the All Blacks with both of it coming this year came off the bench during the game against Tonga but experienced symptoms on his arrival to Japan for the showpiece event.

New Zealand head coach Steve Hansen expressed disappointment on the news and wished Jacobson a speedy recovery.

“After discussing this latest episode with Luke, as well as our medical team, the decision has been made to, sadly, withdraw him from the tournament,” said Hansen to the All Blacks’ official website.

“We all felt that the best thing for him to do is to take a break from rugby until he is symptom-free and ready to return to rugby.

“While it was a tough conversation to have, ultimately it was a very simple decision. We have a duty of care to look after our players and Luke’s health is the most important thing above anything else.

“Luke’s a young man with a hugely promising career ahead of him and I’m sure he’ll get the chance to play at other Rugby World Cups in the future.”

The 22-year-old will now be replaced by Highlanders back-row Shannon Frizell as New Zealand aim to complete hat-trick of World Cup triumphs after previously winning the 2011 and 2015 editions.

Frizell has played five Tests for New Zealand with his last appearance coming during the Rugby Championship clash against South Africa in Wellington.

New Zealand will face South Africa, Canada, Namibia and Italy in the World Cup that kicks-off on 20th September.
