Elton Jantjies contributed with 16 points while Jaco Kriel scored the decisive try as Lions overcame Sharks with a 34-29 thrilling win in their Super Rugby encounter at Emirates Airlines Park on Saturday.

Fly-half Curwin Bosch got Sharks off the mark with a second minute penalty while Coenie Oosthuizen crossed over five minutes later and soon the visitors had a 10-point lead with the number 10 adding the conversion.

Lions fly-half Elton Jantjies opened the account in the 12th minute when he kicked a penalty but was soon negated by Bosch.

A desperate effort from Jantjies with his second penalty in the 33rd minute got them to six points but it was once again negated when Bosch kicked a drop goal three minutes later.

A sin-bin to Etienne Oosthuizen in the 39th minute helped Lions stage a strong comeback as Malcolm Marx and Courtnall Skosan went past the line on either side of half time to take the hosts to a four point lead for the first time in the game.

The second drop goal in the game from Lions fullback Andries Coetzee which increased their lead to seven points a 54th minute try from Jacobus Van Wyk followed by a conversion Bosch saw Sharks level the scores at the end of the third quarter.

With Bosch and Jantjies exchanging two more penalties the scores were once again level but Kriel danced past the post in the 75th minute to seal a five point win for Lions, who top Africa 2 Conference.
