Experienced fly-half Jonathan Sexton has signed a new deal with Ireland and Leinster that will see him play for the country and province at least 2021.

Sexton, who recently became the second Irish player to be named World Rugby Player of the Year in 2018 enjoyed Six Nations' success with the national side in 2014 and 2015 before guiding them to a Grand Slam in this year' edition.

He was also a central figure in the side's success this year where they went on to become the World Ranked number two side that includes Six Nations Grand Slam, 2-1 series win in Australia and an undefeated autumn international campaign where they defeated All Blacks in Dublin.

Overall, Sexton has played in 84 Tests including six for British and Irish Lions during their 2013 and 2017 tour of Australia and New Zealand respectively.

"I am delighted to sign a new IRFU contract to continue to play for Leinster and Ireland. It is where I have always wanted to play so I am delighted to extend.

"We get looked after extremely well here and it is an exciting time for Irish Rugby. I am looking forward to hopefully being a part of that over the next few years."

His association with Leinster began in 2006 and after a seven year stint he moved to Racing 92 before rejoining the Dublin outfit for his second stint in 2015. He has gone on to make over 150 appearances for the province in which he amassed over 1300 points.

During the course, he also enjoyed four European Champions Cup titles, three Pro 12/14 victories and a solitary Challenge Cup win in 2013.

"Johnny's hunger and drive mark him out as a truly world class competitor," IRFU Performance Director David Nucifora said.

"He sets a performance benchmark for those around him and is investing in the development of young out-halves in the Ireland squad while also seeking improvement in his own performance."
