Exeter Chiefs have confirmed that England international Jack Nowell has undergone successful surgery on his ankle following the injury that he sustained during last season's Gallagher Premiership final defeat to Saracens.

Nowell played 70 minutes in the game at Twickenham Stadium before limping off the field as Rob Baxter's men were edged out by Saracens with a 34-37 margin, as can be seen here on UK free bets.

The 26-year-old underwent scans on his ankle and decided to go under the knife on Tuesday according to the update provided by Exeter Chiefs director of rugby Baxter.

The Exeter boss refused to put a time frame on Nowell's return but is confident of him being part of England's World Cup campaign later this year.

"Jack’s had an operation on his ankle and at this stage we see no reason why it should jeopardise him being involved with England at the Rugby World Cup nor with us heading into the new season," said Baxter in a statement released by the club.

Nowell has featured in 35 Tests including two for the British and Irish Lions and was a member of England's 2015 World Cup squad.
