The England players reportedly got a dressing down after their Old Mutual Wealth Autumn Series victory over South Africa

In the changing room will have been ex Hutton Grammar School's Steve Borthwick. In games across the UK there will have been old boys from schools playing their socks off. Here we report on our friends at Tarleton Rugby Club, home to old boys and teachers from Hutton.

Tarleton Seconds faced Thornton Cleveleys at Carr Lane on Saturday and for the first 10 minutes off the game it was difficult to tell who had the upper hand. The wet conditions had made the ball behave like a piece of soap and the game was strewn with handling errors that stopped any flow for either side.

Tarleton started to keep the ball in the forwards and from a 5mtr line-out following a penalty for illegally killing the ball Tarleton drove the ball forward and Lee Waddell peeled off the back to score a good try.

From this moment on the game was all Tarleton and Thornton found themselves trying to defend from attacks that were coming from all over the pitch. A clearance kick by the Thornton Cleveleys full back was gathered by Ben Walton and run back into the 22 where the ball was shipped to Dave King who almost made the line but a last ditch tackle brought him down A quick ruck saw the ball flipped to Jamie Simpson who crashed through two defenders to score. Aidan Miller added the extras and Tarleton were now 12-0 ahead

Tarleton still piled on the pressure and the next try came from a good run by Dave King who scored under the post despite the attentions of the Thornton Cleveleys full-back and Aidan Miller added the conversion.

With half time approaching Tarleton continued to pressurize and both Lee Waddell and Brian Parsons almost made the line but Thornton were defending well. However, moving the ball wide once again from a yard making maul saw the ball in Matt Forrest’s hands and he ran a great line to bamboozle the Thornton Cleveleys defenders and score under the sticks, Aidan added the extras and at the break Tarleton led 26-0.

The second half was a bit of a none-event with more errors and Thornton Cleveleys organising their defence better a stalemate ensued.

Both sides got a converted try in the second half to make the final score 33-7 to Tarleton, another good win that keeps them in the hunt for possible promotion.

The First XV had a week off and they face Pendle First XV away next week with the Seconds travelling the short distance to face Preston Grasshoppers 4th. XV. Again these are both must win games.
