Steffan Evans scored a double including the decisive one in the final 10 minutes as Wales managed to edge out Samoa by 17-19 in their final game of the summer tour at Apia Park on Friday.

Nearly 10 players in the Wales camp including captain Jamie Roberts came into the game with illness due to a stomach bug.

Alapati Leiua scored an early try for Samoa in the third minute and was followed by a conversion Tusi Pisi as the hosts raced to a 7-0 lead. The Samoan fly-half also kicked a penalty to stretch the lead to 10 points by the end of the ninth minute.

Wales' response in the first half came through only Sam Davies as the number 10 kicked three penalties in 12th, 19th and 37th minute to reduce the difference between the teams to one point at half time.

Evans got Wales into the lead for the first time in the game with an early try in the second half but Samoa bounced back when Manu Leiataua crossed over in the 52nd minute. At the end of the third quarter, Samoa had a slender three point lead over Wales.

Just when it looked all over for Wales, Evans, strolled past the post in the 73rd minute for the crucial try that helped Robin Mcbryde's men complete a thrilling two point victory to end their summer tour on a high.
