Aviva Premiership club Sale Sharks have registered rugby league star Denny Solomona in their squad for the European Champions Cup anticipating him to switch codes.

Sale Sharks rugby director Steve Diamond revealed last month that the English club is interested in signing the 23-year-old after reports emerged of him resigning from his rugby league club Castleford Tigers.

The Tigers are now contemplating legal action against Solomona after the winger failed to report for the pre-season training and has been contracted with the club until 2018.

The chief executive of rugby league Nigel Wood has already expressed his concern to Rugby Football Union and Premiership Rugby over the act of Sale Sharks in signing Solomona.

"This has profound implications for the game," Wood said.

"Clearly the sanctity of contracts have to be respected. It's a concern for more than the game, it's bigger than just rugby league or rugby union, it's almost like a law of the land issue really.

"Unilaterally walking away from things is not something you would condone.

"We've been in contact with both the RFU and Premier Rugby to express our concerns. They are aware of our position."

Wood also cited the case of New Zealand star Sonny Bill Williams who switched code from NRL club Canterbury Bulldogs in 2008 to French giants Toulon and was slammed with heavy compensation.

Solomona made his debut for Samoa in October and also had a splendid 2016 Super League season where he broke Lesley Vainikolo's record of most tries scored when he went past the line 40 times.
