Denmark v Slovenia - By George!

Last week saw Slovenia win their season opener against rivals Serbia. The Skofic brothers all participated with four of them scoring tries. Which of the brothers missed out? Unfortunately it was TalkingRugbyUnion's Max Skofic!

This weekend the rugby-playing brothers head to Denmark to join the squad for Saturday's international. We asked TalkingRugbyUnion's Max Ashcroft and Austin Halewood about brother number four, George.

"George and I started playing rugby together aged six at Tarleton Rugby Club. We played at all age groups through to 1st XV at the club; something we are both incredibly proud of," commented Max Ashcroft.

The two rugby-playing friends then moved onto secondary school together. Hutton Grammar School, near Preston, was their destination - a state school with an immense reputation for rugby.

Alumni include Tony Swift (Bath and England), Steve Borthwick (Bath, Saracens and England), Garth Dew (Sale and England U20s), Dan Hall (Sale and England U18s), Ben Vernon (Fylde and England U16s) and Mike Haley (Sale and England U18s).

Coaching credentials include Brian Ashton, Paul Manley, Lee Waddell, Ian Rawsthorne, Graham Aitchison and the late Bob Kennedy.

The year group that George joined put a team together that would go onto win Lancashire Age Group Cups and Northern Floodlit Competition.

With such a successful team came representative honours for Lancashire for George. He followed in his brothers' footsteps and it is his match-winning performance against Durham at Under 16s that sticks in Max's mind.

"We travelled to Barnard Castle School and in a tight game it was George who broke through on two occasions to score individual tries."

Another team-mate, Austin Halewood, told us, "Every coach recognised how good a player George was but for many years couldn't work out if he was a hooker, a flanker, a centre or a winger.

"One thing for sure he would always score tries, was brave in attack and defence but elusive in attack."

George graduated from Leeds Carnegie this year and is currently at Edge Hill University.

For Slovenia, George plays on the wing and scores tries. This weekend in Denmark we wish him, his brothers and both teams good luck.
