England number eight Billy Vunipola is in danger of missing out on the Six Nations 2017 campaign as he is set to undergo a knee surgery.

The 24-year-old sustained a torn cartilage at the closing stage of the first half in the game against Argentina at Twickenham on Saturday and was replaced Teimana Harrison.

England coach Eddie Jones wished Vunipola a speedy recovery.

"Billy's been absolutely fantastic for England over the last 11 months and we wish him a quick recovery," head coach Eddie Jones said.

The surgery is likely to keep him out of action for at least three months which means he will be missing England's final autumn international fixture against Australia next weekend and might also miss the Six Nations 2017 for the Grand Slam Champions next year.

Jones admitted that Vunipola's absence will be felt in the game against Australia but is confident that his replacement will step up as England are eyeing to go undefeated this year.

"Billy has been a very influential player in the set-up and there's no doubt he'll be missed for the game against Australia, but where there's an injury there's an opportunity for someone else," Jones said.

"We've had five or six front line players missing throughout the series so I've no doubt we'll adapt and work that little bit harder this week.

"I'm sure the players will respond to this by going up a level and peak for this game."

Nathan Hughes is likely to replace Vunipola provided he recovers from a foot injury while Josh Beaumont and Jack Clifford are the other options.

Joe Launchbury was present in England's Surrey training base despite the two-week ban while Elliot Daly, who is set to undergo a disciplinary hearing on Monday was replaced by Mike Haley.
