Alun-Wyn Jones is all set to succeed Sam Warburton as Wales skipper as the Wales lock will be handed the opportunity to showcase his captaincy credentials for the British and Irish Lions tour.

Sportsmail are reporting that the 31-year-old is set to take over from Warburton, who has agreed to stand down from the role to concentrate on retaining his place on the openside for Wales this year.

Warburton's jersey is under threat from Justin Tipuric, his long-standing No 7 rival.

Jones is set to formally take over the leadership duties next Tuesday when Rob Howley will name his first squad of the Six Nations.

Jones, is front-runner, along with Ireland hooker Rory Best, to lead the Lions in New Zealand in June under Warren Gatland in the wake of Dylan Hartley’s sending off against Leinster in early December.

Brian O’Driscoll has also recently backed Jones, who captained the Lions in the final 2013 Test against the Wallabies in Warburton’s absence.

"Alun-Wyn Jones must be a favourite to lead the Lions in New Zealand with some towering displays for club and country," said Brian O'Driscoll, speaking at a Thomas Pink Lions event.

"In my opinion, given recent events, Alun-Wyn and Rory Best are now clear favourites."
