Aled Davies is only uncapped player in Wales Six Nations squad

Scarlets scrum-half Aled Davies is the solitary uncapped player named in a 37-man Wales squad for this season's RBS 6 Nations Championship.

Wales head coach Warren Gatland has also handed recalls to Cardiff Blues wing Tom James and Blues flanker Josh Turnbull, while centre Jonathan Davies returns after missing the World Cup because of injury.

Injuries, meanwhile, rule out the likes of full-back Leigh Halfpenny, centre Scott Williams and scrum-half Rhys Webb.

Wales kick off their Six Nations campaign against Ireland in Dublin on February 7.

The squad includes 31 players who featured for Wales during the World Cup, when Gatland's men reached the quarter-finals before bowing out against South Africa.

Scrum-half Mike Phillips announced his retirement from Test rugby after the tournament, with newcomer Davies joining fellow number nines Gareth Davies and Lloyd Williams.

Scarlets back Liam Williams, who has been sidelined by injury, features in the squad, along with lock Jake Ball, who is currently absent from Scarlets duty due to injury.

Williams, who it is understood could make his comeback next week, would be favourite to take over the number 15 shirt from Halfpenny, if fit.

And while Gloucester back-row forward Ross Moriarty makes the squad, there are no recalls for his club colleagues James Hook and Richard Hibbard.

Hooker Hibbard and fly-half Hook both missed out on World Cup squad places, although Hook was subsequently called up to join the World Cup group as an injury replacement.

Lock Alun-Wyn Jones, whose re-signing of a national dual contract with the Ospreys and Welsh Rugby Union was announced on Tuesday, features among a powerful contingent of forwards, joining fellow star names like captain Sam Warburton, prop Gethin Jenkins and number eight Taulupe Faletau.

Gatland said: "We have selected a squad that rewards players' form as well as picking a lot of experience, and that continuity is important to us.

"We have picked a larger squad than normal. We have a few injuries at the moment. Those players aren't too far away from getting back on the field, so we are happy with the mix.

"Aled (Davies) is someone who has been on the radar the last couple of years, and his selection is reward for his form.

"Tom (James) is playing very well for the Blues, and we have been impressed with Josh's performances recently.

"It is always exciting when the Six Nations comes around, and we are looking forward to meeting up next Monday."
